On this date in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified. It guaranteed women the right to vote.

Wish we could make all our elected officials watch these and learn!

After some dilly-dallying, I decided to ramble on a bit about the Preamble to the United States Constitution.
“We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”
And now a few words of my own on parts of this.
“We the People of the United States”: It seems to me this is those of us who are citizens of our great country. “We the People” does not mean those who come to this country illegally. Everyone in this country is subject to the laws of our country. Including the president and the people in Congress, a fact some of them seem to frequently forget.
“Insure domestic Tranquility”: Do you feel like our country is tranquil? I certainly don’t. Our governmental “leaders” just keep stirring the pot which only makes things less tranquil. And, yes, there are other groups and factions who stir the pot too. But those of us who would like to peacefully go about our lives are constantly having our rights nibbled away. Is it any wonder we need to stand up for ourselves.
“Provide for the common defense”: Our men and women in the military do a great job of this! They have my utmost respect. But again, our “leaders” sometimes, I fear, don’t have much respect for the military. In my opinion, part of our common defense is keeping our borders secure. The Border Patrol does its best with what it has, but the government keeps dropping the ball. It is far past time to fix this problem. No, it isn’t just the current administration. This has been a problem for years. Decades. But it’s time to step up and fix it!
“Promote the general Welfare”: I’m pretty sure that doesn’t mean give handouts to all the people in this country who are too flippin’ lazy to work! Personally, I’m on disability due to a myriad of health issues. Sometimes it’s nice not to have to go to a job every day. I’d be a liar if I said otherwise. But I don’t like having to depend on other people to help me with things. I’ve always been independent and not being able to be as independent as I was once upon a time is incredibly frustrating. So the ones who would rather sit around and do nothing because they’re lazy infuriate me. Hmm. I think I lost sight of my initial point.
According to the Founders, “promote the general Welfare” simply means the Federal government should do nothing that doesn’t benefit everyone. I see plenty of things the Federal government’s doing these days that violates this.
It is well past time for our leaders to act like leaders and do their jobs! Because I’m pretty sure our Forefathers & Mothers would be sadly ashamed of most of them right about now.
And if you, like me, don’t remember studying the Constitution in school, you can buy a Pocket Constitution for a nominal fee. Or you can get electronic versions at a multitude of sites. I suggest you read it. You might be surprised at what it really says.
Finally, to those who think the Constitution is no longer relevant? Riiiight. It’s only the WHOLE BASIS OF OUR COUNTRY!
